 Being 'Religious' and  'religion'

I would like to say that community is one thing and religion another but not so - they are like milk in tea. Unitarianas offer a community of like minded people - in that it is OK to belong and yet have a personal belief. You feel you are with your own tribe when you gather together. There are times in worship when there is a sense of sharing in the spiritual moment communally, and times when the spiritual moment is for you alone. There are times too when there seems to be nothing there. In collective worship we sometimes drift in and out of the group's spiritual dynamic.
On the NUF Facebook page I wrote about the difference between 'religious' and 'religion'. The religious person is one who is connected spiritually within themselves to the sense of the infinite  and to the spirit of life within everything in the world. This creates love, awe and balance within that person. A religion is an organisation based on spiritual teachings. You can belong enthusiastically to a religion and yet not be a 'religious' person. You can be called religious because you follow a religion but be an absolute bigot. In that case the word 'religious' is abused.
